2011 Fall Home Tour Preview IV
This traditional home was built in 1937 on two lots in Kessler Park. The half-acre property, which boasts 200 feet of street frontage, faces the Stevens Park Golf Course, tennis courts and Coombs Creek Trail greenbelt.
The original part of the house was large for its day, with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a library, butler’s pantry and a two-car garage. There was also an additional bedroom and full bath in the quarters above the original garage, which was connected via a gated breezeway. (The arched doorway in the current kitchen is located where the breezeway once stood.) The home has been significantly remodeled and expanded over the years. The most recent previous owners nearly doubled the home’s size to close to 7,000 square feet by enclosing the breezeway between the house and garage, adding two additional bedrooms, an upstairs kitchen, a gym with bathroom, an enormous walk-in pantry, two additional garages and a vaulted family room with large windows overlooking the heavily wooded backyard. The master suite was also renovated by adding the mahogany storage closets at the entrance, expanding and updating the master bathroom and creating a sunroom from an adjacent previously enclosed screened porch.
In 2010, the current owners significantly remodeled the kitchen and casual dining area by relocating the kitchen to the base of the rear staircase (in front of the arched doorway), removing the butlers pantry, adding three feet to a portion of the rear of the house to square off the space, and merging four rooms into one open space.
The house has been owned by only five families, three of whom have been in contact with each other, sharing pictures and stories of their time in this home. Two bedrooms are rumored to be haunted, including the guest room at the top of the front staircase (supposedly by the original owner) and guest bedroom that was once the quarters above the garage. The current owners’ former live-in nanny claims to have seen a male ghost in her bedroom at night numerous times over the course of two years.
